I am going to keep this short, as I’m mentally and physically exhausted (long work week paired with a near-mile swim and a lengthy weights workout this morning) but today was my monthly adventure day! My plan derailed in the best of ways.
I had $40 for this adventure and the desire to make a terrarium. A place opened up near me recently where you can make one while sipping on fancy wine, and I had intended to try it. But then fate intervened.
I ended up deciding to incorporate lunch with one of my best friends into my adventure, so we met at a hip organic cafe in midtown. The parking situation was less than ideal, so I ended up having to park a couple blocks away. That’s when fate stepped in.
As I was walking to the cafe, a little hole-in-the-wall caught my eye. The sign read “Natural Selections, purveyors of all things odd and beautiful.” Anything that claims to admire the “odd and beautiful” will get my attention. So I told myself I would check it out on the way back before heading over to the boozy-succulent place.
YOU GUYS. I nearly cried walking into this place. It was a dream! It was so cool. They specialize in taxidermy, bug-pinning, and (fate) terrariums. I made mine for half the cost of the other place and I got an air plant. They had animal bones, unique glass bottles, preserved reptiles, and live newts. It was something out of a creepy-nerd dream.
Above is my terrarium, complete with geodes, charcoal, shells, a coyote tooth, and a beautiful air plant.
If you are ever in Reno, Nevada, you must check this place out. They’ve been here for three years, and the owner was so knowledgeable and friendly. I know I’ll be going back!
